Recent Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup Experiences

July 6, 2018

Recently I have been playing Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup quite extensively. I seldom get the urge to play video games much anymore, but when the desire does strike, I find myself drawn to games that offer lots and lots of replayability and strategic challenge. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (hereafter refered to as "DCSS") has these qualities in spades. This game, along with Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, is the king of roguelikes for me. Both games have provided me with endless hours of enjoyment.

I have yet to beat DCSS, even on a 3-Rune run. I blame this entirely on my own poor decision making. I have had my biggest recent success with GrFi of Trog. However, many moons ago I reached the bottom of the vaults with a GrGl of Qazlal (my favorite god). I think I must have been playing an older version back then though. It was on an old Windows laptop, and I don't really remember. In fact, I am not even playing the most recent version of DCSS now. Rather, I am playing 0.17, which is available from Ubuntu's default repositories. I will probably upgrade to the most recent version (0.21, I think?) after all my current characters die. I am anxious to try the new Wu Jian Council god.

My most recent playthrough was with a KoAs of Dithmenos, which is a combination I was completely unfamiliar with. It was a lot of fun, though I only experienced up to the early-midgame. I was slaughtered by an Orc Sorcerer on the bottom floor of the Orcish Mines. I had begun to struggle to defeat enemies by that point. I had been relying on sneak-attacks to pick off as many foes as I could, but even tough I had 14 Sneak skill at level 12, I was being detected too often in the Mines for this strategy to be effective. On reading up on the KoAs combo, it seems that Yredelemnul might have been a much-superior god choice. Indeed, Dithmenos feels fairly weak based on my experience.

I will post on the blog about DCSS again, most likely, especially if I manage to finally beat it. I will probably try straightforward combos for a while, like MiBe. I want to win one of these days!
